Alex Cornish is a singer-songwriter from Dunbar, Scotland, a seaside town just outside Edinburgh. He has produced five critically acclaimed albums to date, his most recent being “Hang on the Word” which came out in July this year (“classical and crafted, absolutely magical” said BBC Radio Scotland’s Roddy Hart) .
In session for Dermot O’ Leary he was called a “genius”, Mark Radcliffe declared his music to be “absolutely gorgeous'”, “a voice to stand comparison to Thom Yorke” said The Scotsman on Sunday and “a beautiful album that has Mercury Music Prize nomination written all over it” said The Sunday Times.
So, with all this praise…why you haven’t heard of him? He isn’t sure either but you are in for a great night if you come down – classic and inventive singer songwriting, top notch piano playing, beautiful backing from his band and stories from the road. Not to be missed.
Saturday 10 March 2018 sees the Black Dyke Mills Heritage Venue’s first foray into the world of theatre when we present Spotty Sock’s production of John Godber’s Teechers.
Spotty Socks is Codswallops’ (a charity that nurtures local talent and inspires the next generation of creative thinkers) very own Theatre Company which works hard to prepare budding actors for a professional life in the Theatrical industry. Spotty Socks produce full scale productions of relevant plays in a contemporary manner, engaging wider audiences to the world of theatre.
Teechers features three school leavers, Salty, Hobby and Gail Saunders and their account of their time in secondary school. The play, as is all of Godber’s work, is entertaining, moving and thought-provoking.
Over a career that spans more than a decade and a half and has won her a devoted worldwide fan base, Jess Klein—who possesses what Mojo magazine calls “one of those voices you want to crawl up close to the speakers to listen to” has pursued a remarkable creative evolution that’s seen her dig ever deeper for resonant emotional insights, while continuing to refine her eloquently melodic, effortlessly accessible songcraft. Jon Pareles of The New York Times calls her “a songwriter with a voice of unblinking tenacity…who finds parables in the everyday and also finds humanity behind the archetypal.”

The Rob Dylan Band played the mill last year and went down a storm. We are delighted that they have agreed to a return performance in 2018.
The band was formed by a group of musicians who share a passion for the songs of Bob Dylan and The Band. Recreating the ‘Rolling Thunder” style, their performance brings together the lyrical nature of the songs within a powerful musical arrangement which constantly changes and evolves. Described as “the UK’s best tribute to Bob Dylan” this six piece band have been delighting audiences across the country and we are thrilled to have them back at the mill.
“They rocked the Dylan repertoire with a sleek, tight, passionate performance.” Stef Brickelbank
